About the Opportunity
MH Talent Solutions is partnering with Whitin Community Center (WCC) to recruit its next Athletic Director, a hands-on leadership role with the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on youth, adults, and families throughout the community.
The Athletic Director will lead a diverse portfolio of athletic, recreational, afterschool, and summer programming, including serving as Camp Director for Camp Whitin. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys being both a leader and an active participant, developing programs, coaching staff, connecting with families, and bringing new ideas to life.
What You'll Do
As Athletic Director, you'll take ownership of athletic and recreational programming from planning and development through execution. You'll balance program leadership, staff development, customer service, budgeting, and day-to-day operations while helping create engaging experiences for the community.
Program Leadership & Development
Develop, implement, evaluate, and grow athletic and recreational programs for youth, adults, and families.
Lead afterschool programming and serve as Camp Director for Camp Whitin during the summer.
Develop seasonal athletic, fitness, and summer camp schedules based on community interests, participation trends, and financial goals.
Develop and oversee afterschool, evening, and weekend programming, including opportunities for middle school-aged youth.
Identify opportunities for new programs and enhancements to existing offerings.
Coordinate athletic activities, games, special events, fundraisers, gym rentals, and parties.
Team Leadership
Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate athletic, program, camp, gym floor, and birthday party staff.
Develop effective training programs for athletic and summer camp employees.
Provide ongoing direction, support, and feedback to staff.
Build a positive, collaborative environment focused on delivering a strong member and participant experience.
Operations & Financial Management
Develop and manage the department's annual budget and monitor program expenses.
Maintain appropriate inventory of athletic and recreational equipment and supplies and coordinate purchases as needed.
Oversee the organization, safety, maintenance, and seasonal readiness of athletic facilities, equipment areas, storage spaces, and outdoor recreation areas.
Ensure recreation spaces are properly prepared for programming and returned to appropriate condition afterward.
Follow facility policies and safety procedures, including accident and incident reporting requirements.
Collaboration & Community Engagement
Partner with Member Services, Marketing, Child Care, and other WCC departments to coordinate programming, schedules, facility needs, and promotion.
Collaborate with Marketing to increase awareness and participation in programs.
Support WCC and BVCP fundraisers and free family events.
Work with the Grant Development Manager to identify potential funding opportunities for athletic programs and infrastructure.
Build positive relationships with members, participants, families, and community partners while delivering excellent customer service.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for a hands-on, community-minded leader who brings enthusiasm for athletics and recreation along with the organizational and leadership skills needed to run successful programs.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in athletics, recreation, customer service, or a related field.
Experience teaching, coaching, or working with youth.
At least 2 years of supervisory experience.
Strong leadership and staff-management skills.
Experience managing budgets and the financial aspects of programs.
Excellent customer service, administrative, and organizational skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage competing priorities and adapt to seasonal programming needs.
Strong time-management skills and attention to detail.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Ability to work evenings and weekends as programming requires.
This Is a Hands-On Role
The Athletic Director won't lead from behind a desk. You'll be visible and actively engaged in WCC's programs, activities, facilities, and community.
Candidates should be comfortable:
Actively participating in youth games and recreational activities.
Moving throughout indoor and outdoor recreation spaces.
Bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
Working in environments that range from an office setting to active and sometimes noisy recreation spaces.
Remaining calm and responding appropriately when safety concerns arise.
Adjusting their schedule based on programs, events, and seasonal needs.
