Our client is a boutique CPA firm serving privately owned businesses and their owners, including real estate investors, construction and trade companies, professional service firms, and other entrepreneurial, service-based organizations. The firm supports closely held companies with complex tax considerations. Services include individual, S corporation, and partnership tax compliance; multi-state filings; tax planning and advisory; IRS and state notice resolution; and strategic consulting around cash flow, profitability, entity structure, and business growth. The firm is seeking an experienced Tax Manager who can lead tax engagements, guide day-to-day tax operations, and help scale a high-touch, growing practice.

Role Overview

This newly created hybrid role in Worcester, MA is ideal for a Tax Manager who enjoys both technical depth and operational leadership. You will oversee tax preparation and review for small to mid-market clients (typically $1–5M revenue), many of whom rely on the firm for both bookkeeping and tax services. As the technical owner of tax returns, you will manage the prep/review workflow, elevate quality and efficiency, and serve as a trusted, year-round advisor to clients. This role offers meaningful influence on firm processes, client service delivery, and long-term growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review individual and business tax returns, including Forms 1040, 1120S, 1120, 1065, multi-state filings, and related schedules.

  • Manage the tax preparation and review function that reduces founder dependency.

  • Lead quality control through checklists, sign-off standards; train and support preparers and reviewers.

  • Provide proactive client consulting, tax planning, and clear explanations of tax positions.

  • Mentor senior preparers, set performance expectations, and participate in recruiting as the team grows.

  • Recommend and implement improvements in tax workflows, processes, and technology.

  • Manage deadlines, e-filings, and correspondence with federal and state tax authorities.

Skills & Experience

  • 7+ years of tax preparation and review experience 

  • Experience with Wolters Kluwer CCH ProSystem FX or CCH Axcess preferred.

  • Familiarity with e-filing systems and document management tools.

  • CPA or EA required.
